ACUERDO ACME-INAEM:¿Una Posibilidad Real para la Fusión Moda-Artes Escénicas?

-----------------------------------------------------------------

The working basis of AF Moda, beyond supporting the sector, talking about trends or proposing styling and image consultancy, focuses on the development of the staging as a conceptual and marketing tool for fashion events. In this sense, although we don´t always talk about it, we have a special inclination towards this subject, and recent events deserve a deep reflection from us in our post of this week.

Recently was signed in Madrid an agreement of collaboration between the National Institute of Performing Arts and Music (INAEM) and the Association of Fashion Designers of Spain (ACME) in which both parties agree to coordinate activities and initiatives to promote Spanish fashion and artistic creation, in order to strengthen the "Brand Spain" at national and international level in the areas of fashion, music, theater and dance. As part of the agreement, it was proposed to create annual meeting spaces, collaborative projects, promotion activities, training activities (workshops, thematic conferences, exhibitions, workshops, visits to designers, etc.) and promote research.

So far everything sounds great, and the media have echoed this wonderful initiative. However, form AF Moda, although it seems a very encouraging first step, we can´t completely look at it with favor... at least not until facts end to convince us to do so.

Spanish fashion has been built on a system of operation, management and activity extremely rigid and not prone to change, where the processes of creation, production and presentation of fashion collections work with the same scheme for many years, a scheme that nobody questions or want to change. While in countries like the U.S., France or England fashion shows increasingly get closer to the scenic performance, with powerful shows, in which fashion and scenic-aesthetic concept totally surprise the audience, highlighting the work of actors, musicians and dancers, in Spain unfortunately we keep pulling the fashion shows on the catwalk traditional schemes, where only matters clothing and the "ego" of the designer, without risking anything, without going beyond what has always been done.

For these initiatives of the agreement between INAEM and ACME really worked, it would be necessary that designers and art directors sit together to raise stage proposals consistent conceptual and aesthetically, where fashion and performing arts are truly merged to convey a profound and powerful message for the target audience of designers and firms. It is not enough to put a dancer or a singer in a parade "because it looks good" or "because it draws attention”. It is necessary that this dancer or singer reinforce an aesthetic concept and a creative approach, not as filler but as a thought part of the message creator want to convey with a fashion show and a collection.

We are concerned that this agreement remains in that fashion designers in Spain (ACME members only) "dress" the new work of the National Dance Company or other members of INAEM. We are concerned that this agreement will lead to the simple presence of dancers or actors in the shows of fashion designers in Spain (again, only the ACME members) as a "flashy filler" and nothing else. We are concerned that they do many conferences or many research and meeting activities, but that deep inside they don´t develop real alternatives for that fusion of fashion-performing arts, creating experiences for audiences of both disciplines, where the goal is not to satisfy the professional’s egos but to improve creation and art. We are concerned that nothing really changes despite initiatives.

From AF Moda we are aware that it is early to take a position about this agreement, and that these kind of projects, like everything in life, should be given the benefit of the doubt, and trust that they will achieve good results. We are working on that. We just hope that time and real work put this agreement on the best place with all its potential for the benefit of creation, fashion, performing arts, and all the people who just like us believe in them.
